  Introduction to Ikebana with Speaker Chris Jones 

  Saturday May 24, 2-4pm 

  Mission Hills Nursery 1525 Fort Stockton

  Wine and cheese will be provided at the Nursery during the event

  

  Chris Jones is a relatively recent arrival in Mission Hills.  She moved from the Santa Barbara area in 2020, bringing with her thirty years of experience with and passion for ikebana—the Japanese art of flower arranging.  She has deep knowledge of the Sogetsu School of the practice, which holds that nature releases the creativity in anyone who works with it.

  In the Bay Area Chris found the sensei, or teacher, Soho Sakai and began her formal studies.  She earned her teacher's certificate in Colorado from sensei Kyoko Kita and continued her practice in Santa Barbara.  She has taken many workshops from Sogetsu School masters in Japan and throughout the US.  Here in San Diego Chris studies with sensei Yumi Rakers at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park.  She is also a member of Ikebana International's San Diego branch.

  
  

  Chris is excited to share her love of ikebana with us.  After a brief introduction, she'll demonstrate the first lesson from the Sogetsu School's textbook number one as well as a freestyle arrangement.  She'll be accompanied by her San Diego classmate and friend Jeff Fine, who coincidentally began taking lessons from Soho Sakai in the Bay Area at the same time Chris did.

  Dear Friends,

  The Mission of the Mission Hills Garden Club is to Educate, Engage, Beautify and Give Back. And one of the ways that we give back is by giving Scholarships to Community College students in Horticulture majors. Thank you so very much for your contribution to the Garden Walk; the proceeds of which fund the scholarships we are giving.

  We would like to invite you to come and celebrate our 2025 Scholarship Recipients on June 12, 2025 from 6pm - 8pm.  The celebration will be at a beautiful house and garden in Mission Hills. Please RSVP no later than 5PM on 5/31 if you will be attending. You will receive the address by email the week of the event.

  The next Coffee in the Garden will be at the home of  Barbara Mandel.  This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow members, exchange gardening tips, and enjoy a peaceful start to the morning in a charming outdoor setting.

  
  

  It will be Saturday, June 14th from 10:00am - Noon.  The address will be sent a few days before the event.

  Bring your favorite finger foods appetizer and/or dessert.  

  We will provide wine, drinks and paper goods.

  This meeting is all about you and your Garden Club membership. You will learn more about what your Garden Club does, how you can take advantage of your membership, and how to volunteer to help out. We will review past events like the Mission Hills Garden Walk, Monthly Program Events at the Church and Mission Hills Nursery, Coffee and Wine in the Gardens, Field Trips, Community Enhancement Activities, the Website and Social Media, Scholarships Awards and Ceremony and many other things.

  Please come ready to provide suggestions for the upcoming year!
